Difficult Emotions, Coping Skills and Substance Use
Emotions are an integral part of the human experience, but that doesn’t mean an emotional experience is always pleasant. In reaction to strong or difficult emotions, it can feel like that emotion is taking the wheel and we are riding in the back seat- whether that is fear, anxiety, sadness, anger, or any combination. Learning skillful ways to listen to, and cope, with those emotions and the life events eliciting them serves as a huge step toward healing and finding balance in life. Oftentimes that includes unlearning maladaptive coping skills, such as alcohol and drug use, avoidance, or self harm. Through therapy, my goal is to help individuals develop coping skills, build confidence, and find a more balanced and meaningful life– as well as make space for more positive emotions than can be allusive at times
Clients I Work With
I work with adolescents (11 years old+) and adults who are struggling with anything from anxiety, depression, mood disorders, and addictions to stress management, relationships, boundary setting, difficult life events, and finding identity. I also work with adolescents and adults with co-occurring intellectual/developmental disabilities.
How Therapy with Me Can Help
I offer therapy with a strengths-based and person-centered approach meant to meet you exactly where you are at. I utilize a blend of evidenced-based practices, including cognitive behavior therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, and motivational interviewing. I also incorporate artistic and creative means of therapy whenever possible. I value strong and genuine therapeutic relationships and feel the most progress can be made when a client and therapist work as a team towards common goals.
On a more personal note...
I moved to the Triangle from Chicago in 2019 and have loved getting to spend weekends at the beach with friends and family. I recently adopted a kitten who likes to keep my hands full! When I’m not at work, you can most likely find me taking care of my houseplants or exploring art galleries. Ready to book? Use the button below to go directly to our online scheduler.
