How To Tell If Someone Has a Problem with Alcohol

When Drinking Alcohol Becomes A Problem

Alcohol is everywhere and consuming alcohol is frequently a normal part of our celebrations. So how do you know when someone is taking it too far? There are several warning signs and indicators that therapists look for to determine if someone has an unhealthy relationship with alcohol or is in need of more treatment.

Here are few warning signs to look out for:

  1. The person has several drinks (4+) every time they drink.

  2. The person continues to drink despite negative consequences from drinking such as:

    1. legal problems (DWI, assault, public intoxication, etc.)

    2. relationship problems

    3. health problems

    4. effects on work performance or attendance

  3. The person drinks alcohol several nights per week and binges when they do

  4. The person experiences withdrawal when they do not drink (i.e. shakiness, nausea)

  5. The person seems to be able to drink large amounts of alcohol without seeming intoxicated

This is not an exhaustive list, but simply a few warning signs to look out for. Are there people in your life you are worried about their drinking? I want to hear from you.
